What is the Internet? Webopedia Definition

By Vangie Beal

The Internet is generally defined as a global network connecting millions of computers. More than 190 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions.

The Internet is Decentralized

Unlike online services, which are centrally controlled, by design, the Internet is decentralized. Each Internet computer, called a host, is independent. Operators can choose which Internet services to use and which local services to make available to the global community. Remarkably, this anarchy by design works exceedingly well. There are a variety of ways to access the Internet. Most online services offer access to some Internet services. It is also possible to gain access through a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Is Web and Internet the Same?

The Internet is not synonymous with World Wide Web. The Internet is a massive network of networks, a networking infrastructure. It

Software is a set of programs, which is designed to perform a well-defined function. A program is a sequence of instructions written to solve a particular problem.

There are two types of software −

  • System Software
  • Application Software

System Software

The system software is a collection of programs designed to operate, control, and extend the processing capabilities of the computer itself. System software is generally prepared by the computer manufacturers. These software products comprise of programs written in low-level languages, which interact with the hardware at a very basic level. System software serves as the interface between the hardware and the end users.

Some examples of system software are Operating System, Compilers, Interpreter, Assemblers, etc.

Here is a list of some of the most prominent features of a system software −

  • Close to the system
  • Fast in speed
  • Difficult to design
  • Difficult to understand
  • Less interactive
  • Smaller in size

Logical operators in programming

john rambo

Logical operators are also called boolean operators. They operate
with truth(boolean) values and the result is always a truth value (true
or false). These operators are useful if you want to combine several
conditions into a single statement.

    The new operators: &&(AND), ||(OR), ^(XOR), !(NOT).
Before
we analyze each of them, let’s recall what is a boolean data type. It
holds a truth value. You can take a quick look in the Data Type lesson.

&& Logical AND

Logical AND, also known as conjunction.
It takes two operands. Returns “true” if both operands are true, otherwise returns “false”. For example we use three variables: bLeft, bRight, bResult:

bResult = bLeft && bRight
bResult will be “true” only if “bLeft” AND “bRight” are

10 Breakthrough Technologies 2018 – MIT Technology Review

john rambo

Every year since 2001 we’ve picked what we call the 10 Breakthrough Technologies. People often ask, what exactly do you mean by “breakthrough”? It’s a reasonable question—some of our picks haven’t yet reached widespread use, while others may be on the cusp of becoming commercially available. What we’re really looking for is a technology, or perhaps even a collection of technologies, that will have a profound effect on our lives.

For this year, a new technique in artificial intelligence called GANs is giving machines imagination; artificial embryos, despite some thorny ethical constraints, are redefining how life can be created and are opening a research window into the early moments of a human life; and a pilot plant in the heart of Texas’s petrochemical industry is attempting to create completely clean power from natural gas—probably a major energy source for the foreseeable future. These and the rest of our list will

Best Computer Buying Guide – Consumer Reports

Speed matters. Processors with multiple cores can process more data simultaneously, with four cores now increasingly common on laptops. Our ratings say how many cores a laptop’s processor has.

Clock speed, measured in gigahertz (GHz), along with the number of cores and other factors, determines how quickly a processor can process information. Many processors can up the speed a bit for a brief time to yield maximum performance. Generally, within a processor family, the higher the clock speed, the faster the processor. Clock speeds typically start at around 1 GHz for a mobile processor. Speeds can exceed 5 GHz for a desktop processor.

Power Consumption
Another important factor when choosing a processor, especially for laptops: Lower power consumption equals longer battery life.

If you’re looking for a very basic or budget computer to browse the web, email, and work on Office documents, basically every processor on the market should be

Modern technology: advantages and disadvantages

john rambo

Today, technology is very important because it is used for almost everything and like everything, technology has advantages and disadvantages

The invention of the computer was a very important point. Communication is thus enhanced, and companies can communicate more easily with foreign countries. Research is also simplified

In the world today, people cannot live without technologies such as televisions, mobile phones, computers and others.

These technologies have slowly taken an essential part in people’s day-to-day lives and being without them would be unimaginable for some of us.

To understand technology, one must know what it provides in terms of advantages, but also disadvantages.

Internet Connection Alternatives for Home Networks

john rambo

Most people, particularly in urban and suburban areas, enjoy several options for how to connect to the internet. The connection method you choose affects how a home network must be set up to support internet connection sharing.

Digital Subscriber Line

DSL is one of the most prevalent forms of internet connection. DSL provides high-speed networking over ordinary phone lines using digital modems. DSL connection sharing can be easily achieved with either wired or wireless broadband routers.

In some countries, DSL service is also known as ADSL, ADSL2 or ADSL2+.

Cable Modem Internet

Like DSL, a cable modem is a form of broadband internet connection. Cable internet uses neighborhood cable television conduits rather than telephone lines, but the same broadband routers that share DSL internet connections also work with cable.

Cable internet is perennially more popular than DSL in the United States, but in many other countries, the reverse is true.

The Best Desktop Computers for 2020

How to Choose the Right Desktop PC

Why, given the advanced state of laptops, would you want to buy a desktop PC or Mac nowadays? Simply put: sheer muscle and computing comfort. Mobile devices like laptops and tablets simply can’t fill some computing needs as well as the stalwart desktop.

Desktop-class CPUs and graphics processors are more powerful than their mobile counterparts for the same money. They give you the grunt to finish whatever task you’re working on in less time. Your money goes further with desktop components in general, too, so instead of buying a $500 laptop with a competent Intel Core i3 processor, you can buy a $500 desktop with a more powerful Intel Core i5 desktop CPU in it and maybe even squeeze in a dedicated graphics card.

You can get desktops with screens that are already built in (see our guide to the best all-in-one PCs),
